Highlight colour is a light and iridescent shade that is a neutral—white or light beige—or a pastel shade of any colour.
Accent colour is a bright shade, often complementary with the colour of your iris.
Daily makeup colours
If you can’t be bothered to buy and try the enormous range of eye colours available on the market, you can get by with very few shades that will be compatible with any outfit you wear.
Neutral colours:
beige or brown eyeshadows are the anchors of every woman’s makeup collection. Use them whenever you need to add definition to your eyes without adding colour.
Warm colours:
champagne, peach, copper, warm green, or golden brown suit women with golden blonde, strawberry blonde, red, or brown hair with golden undertones.
Cool colours:
pink, violet, blue, turquoise, cool green, or grey look great with ash blonde, grey, black, or brown hair with burgundy undertones.
To slightly enhance your iris colour, you may use eyeshadow in a complimentary colour directly above your iris. Burgundy accentuates green; golden brown is good for blue; soft peach or apple green for grey; and violet or light blue for brown eyes.
A duotone palette usually contains base and contour shades and is a very convenient way to choose eyeshadow. Two easy-to-blend colour- and finish-coordinated shades are ideal for daily makeup. You may combine eyeshadows yourself; just ensure you choose both colours from the same (warm or cool) palette.
Be very careful with yellow-green colours if you have a pinkish complexion because they may make your eyes look bruised.
Festive makeup colours
If you love experimenting with various shades in bold colours, you can put together a collection of eyeshadows in different shades and textures to match your every outfit, regardless of your complexion, hair, or iris colour. If the shades of your clothes suit you, then your eyeshadows will as well.
Applying three or more colour-coordinated eyeshadows can be tedious for everyday makeup, but can immensely enhance the beauty of your eyes when you really need to bring them forward.
For a sophisticated bright-eyed look, note the primary colour of your accessory or a secondary colour of your attire, and then choose three eyeshadows of the same hue in differing brightness. For example, you may use neutral green as a base colour; very light green as a highlight colour; and dark forest-green as a contour colour.
For a festive youthful look, choose colours from the same (cool or warm) palette. For example, combine violet with turquoise on the upper eyelids with light blue highlighter; a fantastic look for an outfit in bright cool shades.
For exquisite summer party makeup, mix bright or pastel colours from different palettes to create a special effect, but don’t overdo the blending.
Coloured shimmer added to eyeshadow gives it a very rich, iridescent appearance that makes any eyes look irresistibly sparkly and sexy. On mature eyes, excessive shimmer will accentuate wrinkles, but you can use it in moderation for highlighting under the eyebrow and above the iris.
Fine glitter added to matte eyeshadow makes eyes look shinier without accentuating wrinkles; however, if you wear contact lenses, avoid glittery eyeshadow because the particles can end up inside your eyes; another glittery makeup such as eye pencil may be safer to wear.
Avoid bright colours if your eye whites are off-white; bright warm is not flattering for reddish eyes, and bright cool aggravates yellowness. Instead, use pastel to flatter your eye whites.
Remember that dark eye makeup looks great on young women, but is not attractive on mature faces, especially next to white hair. At a certain age, a woman should switch to light eye makeup once and for all.
