How to Apply Eye Shadow

Need to apply eye shadow? You can have beautiful eye shadow without being a makeup pro. Follow these steps to apply eye shadow for a natural daytime look in minutes.

 Instructions

1 Prep the eyelids. Dab a makeup primer product onto the eyelids and delicately blend into lids with your fingers. This step is optional, but it provides long-lasting, noncreasing color.

2 Swirl the eye makeup brush in a neutral-colored eye shadow. If you don't have a neutral eye shadow, you can use face powder. Tap the brush to remove excess powder.

3 Sweep the base color across your entire eyelid area. The base powder will prep your skin for the next eye shadow color. A base color will make the application easier and make the eye shadow color more vibrant and longer-lasting.

4 Using the technique in step 2, apply the main eye shadow color. Apply the eye shadow lightly, starting from the outer upper corner of your eye and following the crease line. Gently brush the color back and forth only at the crease to concentrate more color into the corner of your eyelids.

5 Lightly blend the line of color across each eyelid to get rid of any harsh lines.

6 Using the technique in step 2, apply the highlight eye shadow powder to the area underneath your eyebrow arch. If you don’t have an eye shadow in white or light gold, you can use translucent face powder or unscented baby powder.

7 Take a step back and check your application in the mirror. If the color is not symmetrical, then adjust as needed and blend the color to make both eyelids match.

8 Remove any remnant powder that may have fallen around the eyes with a face powder makeup brush. If you tap the brush before applying, you can prevent this from happening.

About Eye Shadow

The influence of eye shadow on women can be witnessed in art as far back as ancient Egypt. While the ingredients and application methods have changed over the years, the purpose and style have experienced only moderate adjustments. Eye shadow is one of the most popular and frequently applied forms of makeup available. Offering ease of use and application, long-lasting appeal and major impact, eye shadow may be around forever.

 The Facts

Eye shadow is primarily made out of micah (a type of metal in powder form) and powder. Various oils are also used in the making of eye shadow in order to allow the eye shadow to take the consistency necessary to compress and store it in small compartments. The oil also serves the purpose of giving the eye shadow a pleasant scent. Tinted iron oxide is usually used to influence the color of the eye shadow.

 Misconceptions

Used daily by a majority of women, eye shadow is a flexible, colorful way to enhance a face. Contrary to popular belief, eye shadow in a rainbow of colors is not just appropriate as part of a woman's nighttime look. Many women use colorful eye shadow on a daily basis. When used in a conservative manner, eye shadow in colors from black to blue to green can look professional.

 Risk Factors

When applying eye shadow, you have the option of using either a sponge-tipped applicator or a brush. When using a sponge-tipped applicator, be careful not to poke yourself in the eye. Apply the eye shadow with dry hands and a good grip on the applicator. If using a brush to apply eye shadow, brush slowly so no particles of eye shadow get in the eye. Also, make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients before use.

 Type

There are many types of eye shadow from which to choose. Some socially conscious brands offer eye shadow with no animal ingredients and products that are not tested on animals. Others may contain animal products but are hypoallergenic, a blessing for women with skin sensitivity. Some eye shadow creators add extra micah for additional shimmer; others have more of a matte finish. This can be useful when transitioning your makeup from day to evening.

 Benefits

When used properly, eye shadow is a key tool in enhancing a woman's face. Eye shadow can brighten dark eyes and add depth to shallow eyes. Eye shadow can make small eyes appear larger and large eyes smaller. Eye shadow can help mask the aftereffects of a late night out or insomnia. If the eyes are the windows to each individual's soul, eye shadow is the colorful path that leads to them.

Finding the Right Eye Shadow Colors

Your choice of eyeshadow dramatically defines the appearance of your eyes. Eyeshadow can enhance the colour of your iris; soften or intensify your regard with sheer matte or rich shimmery textures; or transform the perceived shape of your eyes with shading and highlighting.

From this article you will learn:

the roles that colour plays in adding definition to your eyes.

how to choose colours for daily use, according to your personal colouration.

how to select colours for special occasions, coordinated with your outfit.

The roles of colour

Before you can select the right colour, you will need to understand the purpose of every shade, and how to combine them in the most flattering way for your circumstance. Here is the terminology used by professional makeup artists

Base colour is compatible with the lightness of your skin. You may choose a neutral shade—beige or brown—or a mute shade of any colour, depending on your makeup objective.

Contour colour is darker than your skin. It can be a neutral shade—dark grey, brown, or black—or a deep shade of any colour.

Highlight colour is a light and iridescent shade that is a neutral—white or light beige—or a pastel shade of any colour.

Accent colour is a bright shade, often complementary with the colour of your iris.

Daily makeup colours

If you can’t be bothered to buy and try the enormous range of eye colours available on the market, you can get by with very few shades that will be compatible with any outfit you wear.

Neutral colours:

beige or brown eyeshadows are the anchors of every woman’s makeup collection. Use them whenever you need to add definition to your eyes without adding colour.

Warm colours:

champagne, peach, copper, warm green, or golden brown suit women with golden blonde, strawberry blonde, red, or brown hair with golden undertones.

Cool colours:

pink, violet, blue, turquoise, cool green, or grey look great with ash blonde, grey, black, or brown hair with burgundy undertones.

To slightly enhance your iris colour, you may use eyeshadow in a complimentary colour directly above your iris. Burgundy accentuates green; golden brown is good for blue; soft peach or apple green for grey; and violet or light blue for brown eyes.

A duotone palette usually contains base and contour shades and is a very convenient way to choose eyeshadow. Two easy-to-blend colour- and finish-coordinated shades are ideal for daily makeup. You may combine eyeshadows yourself; just ensure you choose both colours from the same (warm or cool) palette.

Be very careful with yellow-green colours if you have a pinkish complexion because they may make your eyes look bruised.

Festive makeup colours

If you love experimenting with various shades in bold colours, you can put together a collection of eyeshadows in different shades and textures to match your every outfit, regardless of your complexion, hair, or iris colour. If the shades of your clothes suit you, then your eyeshadows will as well.

Applying three or more colour-coordinated eyeshadows can be tedious for everyday makeup, but can immensely enhance the beauty of your eyes when you really need to bring them forward.

For a sophisticated bright-eyed look, note the primary colour of your accessory or a secondary colour of your attire, and then choose three eyeshadows of the same hue in differing brightness. For example, you may use neutral green as a base colour; very light green as a highlight colour; and dark forest-green as a contour colour.

For a festive youthful look, choose colours from the same (cool or warm) palette. For example, combine violet with turquoise on the upper eyelids with light blue highlighter; a fantastic look for an outfit in bright cool shades.

For exquisite summer party makeup, mix bright or pastel colours from different palettes to create a special effect, but don’t overdo the blending.

Coloured shimmer added to eyeshadow gives it a very rich, iridescent appearance that makes any eyes look irresistibly sparkly and sexy. On mature eyes, excessive shimmer will accentuate wrinkles, but you can use it in moderation for highlighting under the eyebrow and above the iris.

Fine glitter added to matte eyeshadow makes eyes look shinier without accentuating wrinkles; however, if you wear contact lenses, avoid glittery eyeshadow because the particles can end up inside your eyes; another glittery makeup such as eye pencil may be safer to wear.

Avoid bright colours if your eye whites are off-white; bright warm is not flattering for reddish eyes, and bright cool aggravates yellowness. Instead, use pastel to flatter your eye whites.

Remember that dark eye makeup looks great on young women, but is not attractive on mature faces, especially next to white hair. At a certain age, a woman should switch to light eye makeup once and for all.
